What is the candid truth about affairs? How often do people have them? Are the statistics flying around about the number of individuals having affairs actually accurate? It is hard to know the real truth about the frequency and cause of affairs.
The possibility exists that people who have affairs are not going to talk about their infidelities or share the truth with others. That would make surveys and estimates of infidelity inaccurate, which means that the actual incidence of people cheating on their spouses is much higher.
Estimates are that among married men, at least 22 percent have had an affair throughout their marriage. That number is at 14 percent for women. Additionally, people who have affairs do not usually end up marrying the person they cheated with. A study of over four thousand professional men who had affairs showed that only three percent of them left their spouses for their lovers.
This raises questions about why married people have affairs in the first place. It is often not that they feel they have fallen in love with someone who is a better match for them than their current spouse. Affairs are sometimes a sign of issues in the marriage that have gone unaddressed.
For example, a man who travels a great deal for business and is not home to help his wife with the kids might experience communication and conflict in his marriage. A relationship with a co-worker may seem attractive because it does not carry the same level of stress as his marriage. This does not mean that he has found true love or that things would not be difficult if he were to enter a marital relationship with someone new.
According to the Associated Press, in the United States, infidelity is the cause of seventeen percent of divorces. Another finding is that those who do leave their spouses for their lovers have a very high divorce rate, about seventy-five percent. The reason for this is that the lover fears he/she will be cheated on just as the prior spouse was. In some cases, reality finally sets in making the relationship seem less than ideal.
